SPOT Personal Tracker (SPOT-1)
SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker and Messenger
What is the SPOT Personal Tracker?

The SPOT Personal Tracker and Messenger is a handheld satellite communication and safety device. It's key features include:

  • Alerts emergency responders to your GPS location
  • Let's contacts know where you are and that you're ok
  • Sends and saves your location to allow contacts to track your progress using Google Maps
  • Requests help from friends and family at your GPS location.
How Does the SPOT Personal Tracker Work?

SPOT uses the GPS satellite system to determine a user's location and a commercial satellite network to transmit that location and user's status. The SPOT satellite network is a commercial satellite network with a proven 99.4% reliability rate while processing over six million messages a month, which is the equivalent of 2.3 messages per second. The basic connectivity process is as follows:

  1. GPS satellites provide co-ordinates.
  2. SPOT Personal Tracker's on-board GPS hardware determines your exact co-ordinates and sends your location and messages to the commercial satellite system.
  3. The SPOT commercial satellites relay your messages to specific satellite antennas around the world.
  4. Satellite antennas and supporting equipment route your message and location to the appropriate network.
  5. Your message is delivered to the appropriate recipient via text message, e-mail, or emergency service notification.
The SPOT Personal Tracker Requires a Service Plan:
Before you can begin using all of the benefits that SPOT has to offer, you need to first purchase a service plan. In order to operate your SPOT unit you need to subscribe to the Basic Service at a minimum. You then have the option to add Tracking functionality - great for any outdoorsmen, adventure enthusiasts, travellers and families - and the GEOS International Emergency extraction benefit if so desired. is a reseller of the SPOT Personal Tracker only. We do not offer any of the SPOT service plans. You'll need to visit the SPOT website in order to activate your device and sign-up for the service plan.
The SPOT Personal Tracker Tracks Your Progress Along Your Adventure:
This feature of the SPOTS Personal Tracker allows friends and family to follow your progress in real time using your password, or to save waypoints so you can review your entire route at a later date. Once activated, SPOT acquires and sends your GPS co-ordinates to your SPOT account every 10 minutes. Anyone with access to your account information can log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps. To continue tracking on longer journeys, the SPOT tracking function must be re-activated every 24 hours.
The SPOT Personal Tracker Alerts Emergency Responders to Your GPS Location:
You can use this function in the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your location, and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe. Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt to send a distress signal – without exact location – to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.
SPOT sends your GPS coordinates to a GEOS Emergency Response Center every 5 minutes, allowing you to keep moving if necessary. Emergency responders are then updated with your last known location.
The SPOT Personal Tracker Coverage Area:
SPOT works around the world, including virtually all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia, portions of South America, Northern Africa, and North-Eastern Asia and hundreds or thousands of miles offshore of these areas. In Russia, the GPS accuracy of your SPOT is limited (degraded) in accordance with Russian regulations restricting the accuracy of GPS performance for devices utilized in Russia.
SPOT Coverage Map
The coverage map was last updated on 11/08/2009. Please note that this is an Estimated coverage area. Actual coverage may vary. Success rates are forecasts for a SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker to successfully deliver a single message during a 20-minute period, based on network availability. Additionally, in everyday conditions it is normal for some messages to be blocked by your environment, such as hills or buildings. That's why the SPOT Personal Tracker is scheduled to automatically send multiple messages in every mode - giving you excellent overall reliability.
