This new software enables users to browse and download the exact maps they need anywhere in the United States, and add to their collection without having to purchase other map sets.
Making TOPO! Explorer more beneficial and one-of-a-kind is an integrated web site filled with updated trails, roads, and recreational information from professional and community sources. With one click, users can freely discover new places to go through trail maps, photos, and videos, and then add them to their library before printing and heading out the door. This sharing portal will change the way people plan, capture, and share their outdoor experiences with others.

As a new user, you can purchase TOPO! Explorer to gain access to any of the topographic maps and aerial imagery in the U.S. that you want, for an attractive entry-level price. You are not bound by any state or region. As an existing user, you can upgrade to all new features of TOPO! Explorer and gain access to the new on-line map set. Download new maps for new areas or upgrade the maps that you already have to SuperQuads. Either way, TOPO! Explorer is designed to work along with the National Geographic flagship software product, the TOPO! State series.
Map Software Innovations of TOPO! Explorer:

Those users already familiar with the National Geographic award-winning TOPO! products will find new innovations in TOPO! Explorer, including:

  • Sharing: TOPO! Explorer's integrated social portal allows users to quickly discover, download, and share updated recreation information, such as trail descriptions, recommendations, and unique Points-of-Interest, with a community of outdoor enthusiasts.
  • SuperQuads: the new online map set exclusive to TOPO! Explorer. Each SuperQuad contains seven layers of map information including:
    • USGS 1:24,000, 1:100,000, and 1:500,000 scale topographic maps
    • i-cubed Aerial Photography with 4-meter resolution
    • TeleAtlas roads
    • USGS Digital Elevations and Names
    • a new HybridQuad that allows users to blend Aerial Photography with topographic linework.
  • Magellan Triton Support: Export detailed SuperQuad maps from TOPO! Explorer directly to your Magellan Trition handheld GPS receiver. This feature is available on Windows installations only.
  • Photo and Video: A new photo organizer supports high resolution pictures, and the new video capability enables you to share clips of your favourite places and activities.
  • Map Store: Open 24/7/365 the TOPO! Explorer integrated map store enables users to browse and download additional SuperQuads when they need them using the 25 map credits included with the purchase of TOPO! Explorer, or by purchasing additional map credits.
  • 3D on the Fly: Using the new navigation tools, simply tilt and pan to reveal 3D renderings. 3D views on the fly and the updated interface make it easy to visualize, plan, and recall your outdoor adventures.
  • KML and GPX Support: Import your creations from popular third-party applications and GPS receivers for posting to the TOPO! Explorer Community or mash-up with SuperQuads.
  • Map Design Tools: Hundreds of symbol choices, new line styles, and additional colors make it easier to create beautiful maps and share them with friends.
Two National Geographic TOPO! Explorer Versions:

There will be two versions of the TOPO! Explorer product:

  • TOPO! Explorer: Includes the application and credits to download 25 SuperQuads.
  • TOPO! Explorer Deluxe: Includes the application, credits to download 25 SuperQuads, and a seamless set of USGS 1:100,000 scale topographic maps covering the entire US (1:250,000 in Alaska and Hawaii).
TOPO! Explorer Windows and Mac System Requirements:

TOPO! Explorer requires Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, or Vista, Internet Explorer 6 or higher, 512MB RAM plus 64MB video memory, a CD-ROM drive for TOPO! Explorer and a DVD-ROM drive for TOPO! Explorer Deluxe, and a 1GHz CPU PC or better.

For Macintosh users, TOPO! Explorer requires OS X 10.3.9 or later, a 1GHz CPU or better, 512MB RAM plus 64MB video memory, and a CD-ROM drive for TOPO! Explorer and a DVD-ROM drive for TOPO! Explorer Deluxe.
 
We expect to have both versions of TOPO! Explorer in-stock in late May 2008. We will be offering TOPO! Explorer and TOPO! Explorer Deluxe as stand-alone products, as well as in a bundle with TOPO! State.
